Sublime Rhyme: Inspiration by Dr. Seuss

I’m sure no one who knows me would be at all surprised to learn that Dr. Seuss is one of my guiding stars. I grew up reading his stories; and upon reaching adulthood (well, legally, anyway – as I tell people, I have an “Inner Adult”) his words have inspired me. This is just a random collection if images and rhyme I reflect upon from time to time (because random is the way to play, when you’re playmate is Theodor Geisel.)

lotta Lorax

I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living. It’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope, which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.

Thing 2 and Thing 1

The more that you read,
The more things you will know.
The more that you learn,
The more places you’ll go.

Green Eggs and Ham-It's what's for dinner!

So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact
And remember that Life’s a great balancing act.

Cat in the Hat

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not. Just say, "I care!"

From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere.

If you never did, you should. These things are fun. And Fun is good.

A person’s a person, no matter how small.

Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.

You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.

If you can see things out of whack, then you can see how things can be in whack.

Squeekie: My Favorite Stephen King Quote

I adore interesting quotes. Growing up with a professional writer for a father, who shared his passion for writing and storytelling practically from the cradle, I suppose it was only natural. I enjoy sharing the ones I’ve read, and hearing what golden nuggets others have to offer. But…just writing it up and posting a quote now and then seems a bit…well, boring. Sooooo….I’m going to design a nifty image that matches the quote, when I find my fancy struck by the urge. Here’s one of my all time favorites; a Stephen King quote my Dad shared with me many, many years ago. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have over the years…and maybe your fancy will be struck by an urge to share it with others, too.

Squeekie: Keep Your Eyes Open

I’m venturing into a scary world this fall; I’m going back to college at the age of …. well, quite a bit more than the 18 and 20 year olds who were queued up with me, waiting patiently to see the people with the answers on campus. I’ll admit, I felt a bit odd when I noticed a couple of the kids (wait, should I say young adults? I’m not sure; I should probably check into college etiquette for second-timers, like me…but I digress) eyeing me askance. I suppose it could have been my book or my iPhone; maybe they just wanted to see what I was reading…in either format. Once I made it to Answer Central, a delightful young woman (see, I CAN be taught!) assisted me. She cleared much of the path between me and getting up for school every morning, and told me how I might be able to leap the last hurdle.  While she was working on her computer terminal, I let my eyes wander, and I spied the cork board on which they post announcements, posters and other flotsam that washes up in any administrative office. I was not only amused, but thrilled to see a humorous bit of inspiration, in the form of a mini paper t-shirt and a slightly the worse for wear plastic skeleton. The shirt’s message was simple, but inspiring. And the skeleton was all about whimsy. Like any good geek gyrl would, I whipped out my iPhone and snapped a picture, to preserve this lesson 1 for myself, and share it with friends (like you, my fellow geeks!)

The Lesson: You always need to keep your eyes open and your mind receptive to everything around you – animal, vegetable, mineral or extraterrestrial. You can find true inspiration everyday, everywhere. Beyond that, you can share your discovery, your epiphany, with others. Then we can all say, I’m with Awesome!”

  1. because hey, I was on campus, and where better to learn something new or gain a deeper understanding of something you thought you knew.
