Let me preface this with….today, I’m presenting a slightly different kind of geekdom than what you’re normally finding here…..and…..
My Dad is the grandma on the left…..
Yes, I am using all the proper nouns, too….
My Dad is a retired professional sports writer and he still blogs for ESPN Page 2 and he debates sports and other bits of tid with Mike Bianchi and Marc Daniels on their radio show, The Beat of Sports, Monday-Friday, every week. (And they rely on an incredibly talented, incredibly nice guy by the name of Scott Adams, a.k.a. The Prince of Powerball, to keep them organized – yep, Scott hosts the National Powerball Drawing. Yeah, I know some really cool people. But I digress….)
Earlier this week, Dad and Mike got all dolled up, grabbed a burger with a inadequate beef levels, and posed for photos in full drag. Perhaps I should explain….When my Dad was a full time columnist for the Orlando Sentinel (he clocked over 30 years entertaining readers, working for the Sentinel) he became known for his fun, often outrageous costuming themed up with holidays and other holy days, like Thanksgiving, Christmas, the NFL and Fantasy Football Drafts; the World Series; the Superbowl and the days they’d get out the zamboni to set up the ice for hockey at the O-Rena. Occasionally, Dad even coerced, I mean convinced, other writers to don themed threads and get into the spirit of things. Matt Humphrey was the man making Kodak moments with Dad and Mike, this week. Matt also happened to get a couple minutes of video, filming Dad and Mike in their lovely grandma getups, spoofing the classic Wendy’s “Where’s the Beef?” commercials. These pics will be part of the annual NFL preview section of the Sentinel, coming out on September 2, 2010.
For those who may be a wee bit too young to know the commercials, here’s the original Wendy’s commercial, wherein Clara Peller immortalized that bovine inquiry:
And here’s is the 2010 sneak preview slider, featuring Jerry Greene (yep, that’s my Dad!) and Mike Bianchi:
If you’d like to stay up to date on the sporty shenanigans of Dad and his GanGreene, you should check out the other online sports stops.
And if you’re feeling really friendly after watching all this frivolity, hit the Beat of Sports front page, and vote for Madam Greene. We can’t let Mistress Bianchi take that beefy crown, can we?
